Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems Laboratory

LABSON is an applied research laboratory that conducts theoretical
studies and simulations with strong experimental support. Its primary
objective is to generate multidisciplinary knowledge applicable
to the design and development of fluid mechanical, hydraulic and
pneumatic systems and to their use in the automation of machinery
and industrial processes.

Its main areas of activity are:

Conception, design, simulation and calculation up to the prototyping and testing of:

• Fluid mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic components and systems
• Measurement systems
• Demo equipment

Design of automated facilities and fluid power systems

• Industrial-scale testing to assess the operating features, behaviour, etc., of equipment.

• Calibrations
• Diagnostic reports
• Reports on the state of the art (technological development)
• Reports on recommendations
• Selection of measurement systems and test protocols

LABSON holds seven registered patents.

LABSON has carried out its activities in the following sectors:

Agriculture and livestockCapital goodsRenewable energy

Moving, lifting and transport equipment and road maintenance and cleaning equipment.

LABSON is the Spanish representative of Fluid Power Net (FPN), a hydraulic and pneumatic laboratory network that aims to promote and facilitate the exchange of information and resources at the international level.

  • Large-Platform Operation

Development and construction of a solar tracker for application in the field of photovoltaic solar energy.

  • Flood Barrier in Kingston Upon Full

Elevation of the tidal surge barrier in the city of Kingston upon Hull, which protects 17,000 homes from flooding and has been used 33 times since 1980. The gate has a total mass of 212 MT.

  • Flexicast: New technology to integrate iron casting processes

The aim of this project is to generate new technology in which the various stages of the iron casting processes are carried out in one production cell. The new technology will lead to 30% energy savings per kilo of clean iron in large industrial iron foundries.
FLEXICAST is a European project with a total budget of €9.25 M. It is coordinated by LABSON UPC and Fundiciones de Roda, a Catalan company that is part of the Grupo Roquet. Participants in the project include 14 companies and European research centres.

  • High performance suspension for lorries with several axles

The Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems Laboratory (LABSON UPC), in collaboration with Gutmar, has studied and designed a high performance suspension system for heavy goods vehicles and lorries with several axles (such as fire engines, breakdown lorries or racing trucks).

The main advantage of semi-active suspension over passive suspension is that it enables each wheel to be controlled independently, which increases both the vehicle’s road holding capacity and driving safety. Gutmar SA manufactures and carries out maintenance on hydraulic suspension cylinders for four-wheel-drive vehicles and is a leading supplier of precision parts for the aerospace industry.
