NEW TEXTILE STRUCTURE FOR ORTHOPEDIC FABRIC

INNOTEX CENTER/CFT has designed a new textile structure with shape memory and controlled elasticity that is comprised of new threads with a complex structure that can adapt to the profile of sensitive feet. The fabric is particularly useful for diabetics who may develop foot ulcers and skin problems that are often caused by rubbing against shoes and are related to a loss of feeling in the feet. The new structure has bactericidal properties (to prevent foot odour); antiviral, antifungal, anti-algae and anti-spore treatments; and a system to warm the feet in a controlled way. The project was carried out in collaboration with Proorto, an orthopedic textile manufacturer that is already marketing the new fabric.

SKIN CANCER DIAGNOSIS AND PROGNOSIS USING PHOTONICS

The Centre for Sensors, Instruments and Systems Development (CD6 UPC) is coordinating a European project to implement various innovative photonics techniques that can increase the accuracy of diagnoses and prognoses of the various kinds of cancerous lesions of the skin. Two hospitals (in Barcelona and Módena) will introduce a multi-photonic platform that will enable dermatologists and plastic surgeons to make earlier, more accurate and more reliable diagnoses of skin cancers, and to carry out image-guided, minimally invasive operations with greater precision than current systems (dermatoscopy and visual examinations). The platform will reduce operation time and the risks of second interventions, and will improve the efficiency of the processes of detecting and treating skin cancer.

NEW DRIVETRAIN FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES

The Motion Control and Industrial Applications Centre (MCIA UPC) is designing and developing a new drivetrain for high-performance electric vehicles for urban mobility and municipal services. The drivetrain achieves the electrical and electronic integration of all the components required for electric traction in a compact, low-cost powertrain that is fault tolerant and highly efficient. The project is being carried out through a consortium of Spanish and Mexican companies, together with the Faculty of Science and Electronics of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (Mexico).

CIT UPC CELEBRATES ITS THREE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

The UPC’s Technology Center celebrates three years. During this time, it has consolidated an innovative model of collaboration, in which its 20 Member Centers make their knowledge, technologies and research results available to public and private companies and organizations, to promote innovation and provide comprehensive, cross-cutting technological solutions.

CIT UPC: MEMBER OF THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY CLUSTER OF CATALONIA

CIT UPC has joined the Cluster de la Indústria de l'Automoció de Catalunya (CIAC), which was formed in April 2013 to increase the competitiveness of Catalonia-based companies in this sector by boosting their R+D activity. CIT UPC provides experience in technologies associated with the automotive industry, in areas such as advanced materials, simulation, safety and comfort, electricity, electronics and wireless, propulsion systems and Smart Mobility.

PARTICIPATION IN PHOTONICS DAY IN BRUSSELS

CIT UPC has taken part in an information and networking meeting about photonics, in the framework of Horizon 2020. The meeting was held in Brussels on 16 January and was organized by Photonics21 and the European Commission Photonics Unit. During the meeting, information was provided on photonics-related calls in the Leadership in Enabling & Industrial Technologies (LEIT) work programme.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION ENERGY EXPERT

Dr. Pedro Rodríguez, the Director of the Renewable Electrical Energy Systems (SEER UPC) Centre, has been appointed a member of the Group of Experts on Energy in Horizon 2020. This Group is responsible for advising and guiding European Commission services in all areas of energy. Members are appointed individually on the basis of their knowledge and experience.

NEW FINANCIAL CONDITIONS FOR CORPORATE R&D PROJECTS

The Centre for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI) has established new financial conditions for its instruments that support corporate R&D projects. The new features include the introduction of a non-refundable tranche in all of the financial aid. The percentage of this tranche depends on the characteristics of the recipient (SME or large company) and the project (including the location, collaboration with other centres and technological cooperation), and will range from 5 to 25% of the aid that is granted. In addition, the maturity period has been extended for projects funded through the Direct Line of Innovation. The maximum length of the repayment period could now be as long as 5 years, with a one-year grace period.

FUNDACIÓN CYD REPORT ON SPANISH UNIVERSITIES

The Fundación CYD has published a report entitled “Las universidades españolas. Una perspectiva autonómica (2013)” (Spanish universities. An independent perspective). The report provides statistical information on the main characteristics of the Spanish university system by autonomous community and by university. In general terms, the Catalan universities are in leading positions in terms of scientific output and PID projects (CDTI-funded industrial research and technological development projects). The study highlights as a priority the need to promote technology transfer to make use of the knowledge generated in universities.
