UPC INNOTEX CENTER IS LAUNCHED


The UPC has officially launched the INNOTEX Center, a leader in research and development for the textile industry and related sectors that draws on years of experience of university-business collaboration in the fields of textiles, toxicology and environment. Three UPC R+D groups have joined together to form the Innotex Center: the CTF UPC, the CRIT UPC, and the INTEXTER, all of which are housed on the UPC’s Campus in Terrassa. INNOTEX, which is a member of CIT UPC, benefits from:

  • technological know-how, with over 20 registered patents
  • a team of 60 researchers (27% PhD)
  • collaboration with over 1,000 companies
  • participation in the most representative international and sectorial networks
  • 4450 m2 of facilities

The kick-off event was led by Antoni Giró, UPC Rector, Francisco Garcia-Planas, Vice-President of the Confederación de la Industria Textil (Texfor) and Xavier Gil, UPC Vice-Rector for Scientific Policy, It was attended by representatives from a wide range of companies, members of the Catalonian Government ACC1Ó, and UPC's members.

 
 
 
 
 
 

FIFTH CONGRESS ON LEGIONELLA AND ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY


On 6–7 February in Terrassa, the Food Safety and Control Research Centre (CRESCA UPC) held the Fifth Congress on Legionella and Environmental Quality. The Congress provided a forum for discussion of current legislation and existing detection methods and treatments, with particular focus on prevention, education and protection. The aim was to propose new work methods and to plan the development of appropriate safety measures.

 
 
 
 
 
 

GRAPH-TA WORKSHOP


On 19 February, the Data Management Group (DAMA UPC) held the Graph-TA (Graph Technology and Applications) Workshop. The event was attended by international experts on graphs and related aspects (including technology, graph theory, pattern recognition and network modelling, among others). The aim of the workshop was to present research areas in the field and to facilitate collaboration and information exchange. To meet this aim, participants described the results and potential applications of their research. The next aim is to promote new editions of the workshop in the future.

MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES BREAKFAST AT THE UPC AND MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2013


To mark the UPC’s participation in the Mobile World Congress 2013, on 21 February CIT UPC, presented some examples of the University’s technological capacities in the mobile communications field (specifically the work of five research groups), to a group 20 companies linked to this sector. Companies like Abertis Telecom, ATOS, Altran, CA Technologies, Telefonica I+D, Everis, Indra, SEAT, Tempos 21, Vodafone España, Mier Comunicación, Geonik, Lear and GMV.

The UPC is the only public Spanish university to take part in the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2013 (25-28 February, Barcelona). The University promoted its latest innovations in mobile technology, the technological capacities of its research groups in the field, and the potential applications of this technologies in companies.

THE AED VISITS THE UPC


Thirty executives, who are members of the Asociación Española de Directivos (AED), visited the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) on 1 February. They had the opportunity to find out about the University’s technology transfer activity, to visit some of the laboratories and spin-offs that develop cutting-edge technology, and to see the facilities of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.

JOSEP AMAT PhD. RECEIVES THE AWARD OF HONOUR AT THE NIGHT OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE 2013


Josep Amat PhD., Director of the Robotics and Vision Division of the Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB UPC), received the Award of Honour at the Eighteenth Night of Telecommunications and Computer Science. The award was presented by Felip Puig, Minister for Enterprise and Labour of the Regional Government of Catalonia, on 18 February in Barcelona, in recognition of Amat PhD.’s long and outstanding career.

CDEI UPC PARTICIPATES IN A WORKSHOP ON MECHATRONICS IN VIC


Elena Blanco, project leader at the Center for Industrial Equipment Design (CDEI UPC) of the Universidad Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), will present a paper entitled "Aplicación de herramientas de simulación al rediseño de la turbina de un clasificador de partículas" (Use of simulation tools in the redesign of a particle classifier’s turbine).

APPROVAL OF THE SPANISH SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION STRATEGY


The Spanish Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy (2013-2020) and the National Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation (2013-2016) have been approved. These documents will be used as the basis for the Spanish government’s research, development and innovation policy for the next few years. The first document contains the objectives, reforms and measures that should be addressed across the board in research, development and innovation, while the second describes the public administration’s actions, sets priorities, and establishes the resource allocation. Both documents are in line with the European program 'Horizon 2020'.

PITEC 2010 REPORT: THE FINANCING OF BUSINESS INNOVATION


The 2010 PITEC report has been published. Every year, this report analyses the results of the Technology Innovation Panel, which includes data on Spanish companies. The Panel is compiled by the Spanish National Statistics Institute, the Cotec Foundation and the FECYT, with advice provided by a group of academic experts. First started in 2003, the study uses data from over 12,000 companies and includes over 460 variables.

The call for applications is open for the Rey Jaime I 2013 Awards for Basic Research, Economics, Medical Research, Environmental Protection, New Technologies and Entrepreneurship. Each award is worth 100,000 euros.
