HIGH PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION FOR LORRIES WITH SEVERAL AXLES

The Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems Laboratory (LABSON UPC), in collaboration with Gutmar, has studied and designed a high performance suspension system for heavy goods vehicles and lorries with several axles (such as fire engines, breakdown lorries or racing trucks). The main advantage of semi-active suspension over passive suspension is that it enables each wheel to be controlled independently, which increases both the vehicle’s road holding capacity and driving safety. Gutmar SA manufactures and carries out maintenance on hydraulic suspension cylinders for four-wheel-drive vehicles and is a leading supplier of precision parts for the aerospace industry.

SMART SENSOR FOR EARLY FAULT DETECTION IN INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY

The Motion Control and Industrial Applications (MCIA UPC) centre, which is led by PhD. Luis Romeral, together with other European centres and companies, has developed a sensor based on acoustic emissions that is self-powered, smart and capable of automatically establishing a wireless network that helps in the control and maintenance of rotating machinery. This technology has been developed as part of the Mosycousis European project, which aims to develop a system for monitoring mechanical elements for the early detection of faults in industrial machinery. This project is an example of European public-private collaboration to increase the competitiveness of SMEs.

ACTIVITIES CIT UPC

THE UPC TAKES PART IN THE SMART CITY EXPO 2013

Through its Technology Center (CIT UPC) the UPC presented smart city technologies at its own stand at the Smart City Expo World Congress, which was held on 19th-21th November at the Fira de Barcelona. The expertise and technological capacities of the UPC and its research centres were presented in the fields of ICT, energy, the sustainable built environment, mobility, collaborative and resilient cities, and urban safety. Contact was made with over 40 companies and organizations in the sector, to promote potential R+D collaborations.

CIT UPC TAKES PART AT THE ICT CONFERENCE

CIT UPC took part in the ICT 2013 conference held in Vilnius and organized by the European Commission. With over 4,000 participants, the conference presented the information and communication technology objectives for Horizon 2020. The following topics were addressed, among others: the future of cloud computing, broadband, ICT infrastructures, e-skills and safety in cyberspace.

SMART CITY TECHNOLOGIES AT THE UPC

On 15th November, a symposium was held entitled Smart City Technologies at the UPC. At the event, some of the 120 smart city projects that are currently underway at the university were presented to over 55 companies and organizations. The projects include Green radio networks, communications applied to Smart Environments (WiComTec UPC), GIS systems applied to the area of mobility, sport and health (inLab FIB), conditioners for smart grids CITCEA UPC), assessment of resilience and damage detection for electricity pylons (LITEM UPC), virtual and sustainable cities (CPSV UPC) and social robots in Smart Cities (VIS UPC). Other participants included Indra and Seat.

NEW RECTOR AND CHAIRMAN OF CIT UPC

PhD. Enric Fossas took up his post as Rector of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya·BarcelonaTech on 2nd December. The Rector of the UPC is also the Chairman of the UPC Technology Center (CIT UPC).
Enric Fossas has a degree and doctorate in Mathematics from the University of Barcelona. He joined the UPC in 1981 and is currently professor of Automatic Control at the ETSEIB. Since 1994 he has led the Advanced Control of Energy Systems Group - ACES UPC research group -, which is recognized as a quality research group by the Catalan Government.

TEXTILE STRUCTURE FOR FILTERING ALPHA, BETA AND GAMMA PARTICLES

INNOTEX CENTER/CTF has developed a textile structure based on a cellulose biopolymer that can filter around 85% of the alpha, beta and gamma particles in cosmic radiation, which are very harmful to health as they mainly affect the liver, the nervous system, eyes and blood circulation. This new material can be applied to the fuselage of some planes, to the walls and roofs of hotel buildings and in the automobile industry as an internal lining for some cars.
