El consum d\\&#8217;energia necessari per entrenar aquests models i interactuar amb ells augmenta considerablement a mesura que creixen en mida i complexitat.<\/h4><br>Project Header<br>no-repeat;left top;;<br>auto<br>20px<br><br><br>L\\&#8217;entrenament d\\&#8217;un model d\\&#8217;IA consisteix a alimentar les xarxes neuronals que el conformen amb grans volums de dades i realitzar m\u00faltiples iteracions entre aquestes per optimitzar els par\u00e0metres del model i millorar-ne els resultats. Aquestes tasques requereixen una enorme capacitat de processament, cosa que consumeix una quantitat molt significativa d\\&#8217;electricitat. Segons <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1145\/3381831\" target=\"_blank\">Schwartz et al.<\/a>, el cost d\\&#8217;entrenar models d\\&#8217;Aprenentatge Autom\u00e0tic (en angl\u00e8s, Machine Learning &#8211; ML), en termes de recursos inform\u00e0tics utilitzats, va augmentar 300.000 vegades en nom\u00e9s 6 anys (2013-2019), duplicant-se cada 3,4 mesos. Segons <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2311.16863\" target=\"_blank\">estudis m\u00e9s recents<\/a>, aquests costos continuen creixent a un ritme anual de 2,4 vegades des del 2016. Si ens centrem exclusivament en els sistemes d\\&#8217;IA i pensem en un <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2406.18142\" target=\"_blank\">escenari <\/a>intermedi, per al 2027 els centres de dades i servidors amb models d\\&#8217;IA consumiran entre 85 i 134 terawatts hora (TWh) anuals. Aquesta xifra \u00e9s comparable al consum anual d\\&#8217;electricitat de pa\u00efsos <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/10\/climate\/ai-could-soon-need-as-much-electricity-as-an-entire-country.html\" target=\"_blank\">com l\\&#8217;Argentina, els Pa\u00efsos Baixos o Su\u00e8cia<\/a>, i representa aproximadament el 0,5 % del consum el\u00e8ctric mundial actual.Tanmateix, per comprendre completament el veritable impacte ambiental, cal considerar l\\&#8217;ecosistema de l\u2019ML de manera hol\u00edstica, m\u00e9s enll\u00e0 de l\\&#8217;entrenament de models, i tenir en compte la petjada de carboni operativa del ML. Aix\u00ed, la infer\u00e8ncia, que \u00e9s l\\&#8217;\u00fas d\\&#8217;un model entrenat per fer prediccions en temps real, tamb\u00e9 pot consumir quantitats significatives d\\&#8217;energia, especialment en aplicacions a gran escala. Encara que el consum d\\&#8217;energia requerit per una \u00fanica infer\u00e8ncia \u00e9s molt menor que durant l\\&#8217;entrenament, l\\&#8217;\u00fas continu i est\u00e8s en entorns com els sistemes d\\&#8217;atenci\u00f3 al client, la generaci\u00f3 de contingut o la conducci\u00f3 aut\u00f2noma, pot acumular un impacte energ\u00e8tic m\u00e9s gran. De fet, per a serveis com ChatGPT, la infer\u00e8ncia constitueix la causa principal de les emissions, produint en un any 25 vegades les emissions de carboni requerides en el seu entrenament, segons Chien et al.<br><br>Aquest elevat consum d\\&#8217;energia t\u00e9 diverses implicacions:<br><br><br><br>Costos econ\u00f2mics: L\\&#8217;entrenament de models a gran escala \u00e9s car degut als alts requeriments de hardware i l\\&#8217;energia necess\u00e0ria per alimentar els centres de dades.<br><br>Impacte ambiental: L\\&#8217;\u00fas massiu d\\&#8217;electricitat en entrenaments prolongats contribueix a les emissions de carboni, especialment si la font d\\&#8217;energia no \u00e9s renovable. Aix\u00f2 afecta la sostenibilitat de la IA.<br><br>Optimitzaci\u00f3: S\\&#8217;han de desenvolupar m\u00e8todes d\\&#8217;entrenament i infer\u00e8ncia m\u00e9s eficients, incloent-hi l\\&#8217;optimitzaci\u00f3 de models, l\\&#8217;\u00fas de hardware especialitzat com GPUs i TPUs, i l\\&#8217;adopci\u00f3 d\\&#8217;estrat\u00e8gies com l\\&#8217;aprenentatge federat i la compressi\u00f3 de models.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><br><br>En aquest context, el grup de recerca <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gessi.upc.edu\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Software and Service Engineering Group (GESSI)<\/a> de la Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya &#8211; Barcelona Tech (UPC) treballa en GAISSA, un projecte en el marc del qual s\\&#8217;ha desenvolupat l\u2019eina inform\u00e0tica <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/3663529.3663811\" target=\"_blank\">GAISSALabel<\/a>. Es tracta d\\&#8217;una targeta energ\u00e8tica que avalua l\\&#8217;efici\u00e8ncia energ\u00e8tica tant en les fases d\\&#8217;entrenament com d\\&#8217;infer\u00e8ncia de qualsevol model d\\&#8217;aprenentatge autom\u00e0tic, especialment \u00fatil per als serveis d\u2019HPC. GAISSALabel \u00e9s capa\u00e7 d\\&#8217;avaluar la petjada dels models d\\&#8217;aprenentatge autom\u00e0tic, contribuint a millorar la seva efici\u00e8ncia, reduir els costos operatius i disminuir els temps de c\u00f2mput.<br><br>GAISSALabel permetr\u00e0 als desenvolupadors de models d\\&#8217;IA:\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><br><br>Monitorar el consum energ\u00e8tic i generar informes detallats.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br>Identificar \u00e0rees de millora per, a l\\&#8217;hora de programar, reduir el consum energ\u00e8tic de l\\&#8217;entrenament i infer\u00e8ncia de models ML.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br>Optimitzar models per fer-los m\u00e9s eficients en termes de temps i recursos.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><br><br>Seguint les recomanacions de refactoritzaci\u00f3 de l\\&#8217;eina GAISSALabel, els enginyers de ML podran millorar l\\&#8217;efici\u00e8ncia energ\u00e8tica dels sistemes d\u2019ML fins a un 50%, cosa que tamb\u00e9 permetr\u00e0 una reducci\u00f3 en el cost econ\u00f2mic dels projectes d\u2019ML (per exemple, reducci\u00f3 de la factura el\u00e8ctrica dels centres de dades i HPC).<br><br>GAISSALabel proporciona solucions a tres nivells:\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><br><br>Social, fomentant el comprom\u00eds amb l\\&#8217;efici\u00e8ncia energ\u00e8tica dels sistemes d\\&#8217;ML i permetent als usuaris finals seleccionar i utilitzar sistemes d\\&#8217;ML sostenibles.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br>Per als prove\u00efdors de hardware d\u2019ML, dotant-los dels recursos necessaris per desenvolupar ML de manera sostenible, amb l\\&#8217;ajuda d\\&#8217;eines de gesti\u00f3 i report dintre del marc regulatori.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br>Individual, ajudant els cient\u00edfics de dades i enginyers de ML entendre i gestionar l\\&#8217;efici\u00e8ncia energ\u00e8tica en producci\u00f3 a trav\u00e9s d\u2019una major consci\u00e8ncia i comprensi\u00f3 del consum energ\u00e8tic inherent dels sistemes i eines d\\&#8217;ML.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><br><br>El projecte es va iniciar el desembre de 2022 i finalitzar\u00e0 el setembre de 2025.
