El Data Management Group (DAMA UPC) has been the technology partner in the development of the Go Zero Waste app, which was created to facilitate local shopping without waste. The idea emerged from the personal experience of Martí Morató and Magda Cebrián, two people from Barcelona who proposed shopping with less use of plastic and much more centred in small shops in the neighbourhood.

The application has an interactive map to geolocate shops in the area that do not use plastics and have alternatives to conventional products. Searches can be carried out by product, location or name of the shop. In addition, the application has a series of challenges that encourage users to take small actions to gradually change their consumption habits and make them more sustainable.

The current version of the app has been developed through collaboration between Go Zero Waste and Sparsity Technologies, a spin-off of the Data Management group (DAMA UPC) and marketer of the technology developed by the group. The app published in May is present is Spain and eight other countries (Chile, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Belgium, Andorra, Germany and Italy) and has been downloaded over 15,000 times. Currently, work is being carried out on new functionalities and on the expansion to more countries. Some of the new functionalities include enabling shopkeepers to manage the information about their shop and offer discounts, and recommendations and aspects relating to mobility.
