Researchers from the Centre for Image and Multimedia Technology of the UPC (CITM) and from the DiCode research group (Digital Culture and Creative Technologies Research Group) of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya \u2013 BarcelonaTech (UPC) have worked on the project The Eyes of History, an initiative of the Catalan Agency for Cultural Heritage that offers an immersive view of Catalan cultural heritage. It is especially aimed at the first and second cycles of secondary education and was created to bring heritage into the classroom. Its goal is to bring the history and monuments of Catalonia closer in a vivid and innovative way, using tools such as virtual reality and new museographic narratives.<\/h4>

The project pursues two main objectives:<\/h4>



To make heritage more accessible and easier to understand for all audiences, especially young people and students.<\/span>

To experience history in the first person: understanding what a place was like, why it was important and what was happening at the time.<\/span>



The project has been designed around learning situations created by a team of professionals specialised in pedagogy, education and the socialisation of heritage. Each situation combines several classroom sessions with immersive experiences in a virtual reality room that the project team brings to the school, with a total of between 9 and 11 sessions.<\/span><\/p>

The learning situations developed are:<\/h4>



Rock art site of Roca dels Moros \u2013 El Cogul (Les Garrigues)<\/span>

Charterhouse of Escaladei (Priorat)<\/span>

Romanesque complex of the Vall de Bo\u00ed (Alta Ribagor\u00e7a)<\/span>

Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes (Alt Empord\u00e0)<\/span>

Castle of Miravet (Ribera d\u2019Ebre)<\/span>



The main educational advantages include:<\/h4>



Immersive learning: combining storytelling, virtual reality and reflective work.<\/span>

Access to heritage from the classroom: especially useful for schools that may not be able to visit these sites in person.<\/span>

It promotes knowledge of Catalan cultural heritage in an engaging and meaningful way.<\/span>



The CITM has contributed its expertise in the design of immersive interactive experiences in virtual reality and applied video game environments. Teaching staff from the field of Game Design and Development have created the narrative and gameplay scripts for the five experiences, based on heritage-related events in Catalonia and from an educational perspective.<\/span><\/p>
