{"id":11174,"date":"2018-11-13T09:49:30","date_gmt":"2018-11-13T09:49:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/cit_upc_smart_city_2018\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T15:33:01","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T15:33:01","slug":"cit_upc_smart_city_2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/en\/cit_upc_smart_city_2018\/","title":{"rendered":"CIT UPC at the main world congress on smart cities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\">13\/11\/2018<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The UPC presents various technology prototypes at&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smartcityexpo.com\/\">Smart City Expo World Congress<\/a>, a leading event in the smart cities industry that brings together experts and suppliers in this field, and 890 exhibitors, on 13 to 15 November at Fira Barcelona (Gran Via site).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smartcityexpo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smart City Expo World Congress<\/a>, the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya (UPC) through the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/ca\">CIT UPC Technology Center<\/a>&nbsp;presents A4EU: a multi-risk platform for early detection in Europe of hazards due to extreme weather and climate events. The technology, which was developed as part of the&nbsp;ANYWHERE&nbsp;European project led by the UPC&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/crahi.upc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center of Applied Research in Hydrometeorology (CRAHI)<\/a>, helps to improve the coordination of teams acting in emergency situations and the populations exposed to the risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the fair, the UPC shares a stand (no. 506, in Hall 2) with the\u00a0Echord ++\u00a0European project in which the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iri.upc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics (CSIC-UPC)<\/a>\u00a0is involved. One of the other prototypes displayed by the UPC is a sensor created for the European project\u00a0CAPTOR. These devices have been used to measure air quality (particularly tropospheric ozone) in pilot projects in Spain, Italy, and Austria. The coordinators of this initiative are\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/futur.upc.edu\/JorgeGarciaVidal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jorge Garc\u00eda Vidal<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/futur.upc.edu\/JoseMariaBarceloOrdinas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Barcel\u00f3<\/a>, researchers in the UPC Department of Computer Architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other items on the UPC stand are a omnidirectional rotation system, designed by the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cdei.upc.edu\/ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Industrial Equipment Design Centre (CDEI)<\/a>, which can rotate 360 degrees and is based on the incorporation of standard wheels. The design can be used in sectors such as logistics, hospitals, mobility, and transport. In addition, a scalable power module will be exhibited, which was designed by the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.citcea.upc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre of Technological Innovation in Static Converters and Drives (CITCEA)<\/a>. The module can be configured in different ways for convertor equipment, so that energy can be manged bidirectionally (for chargers of electrical vehicles, among other applications).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong><strong>Project and technological capacities<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other projects that the UPC is working on in the area of&nbsp;<em>smart cities<\/em>&nbsp;will be presented at the Congress:&nbsp;PaperChain, a circular economy model for transforming paper waste into secondary raw materials;&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upc.edu\/ca\/sala-de-premsa\/noticies\/la-upc-construeix-una-planta-per-produir-bioproductes-i-bioenergia-a-partir-aigues-residuals-mitjancant-microalgues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Incover<\/a>, a system for producing bioproducts and bioenergy from microalgae cultivated in waste water; and&nbsp;Optima, an initiative focused on the development of smart equipment for the application of plant protection products to improve food quality.
