{"id":7539,"date":"2020-09-15T11:44:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-15T11:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/mercabarna_upc_catedra\/"},"modified":"2025-03-13T13:00:32","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T13:00:32","slug":"mercabarna_upc_catedra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/en\/mercabarna_upc_catedra\/","title":{"rendered":"Mercabarna and the UPC create a university chair to fight against food waste"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The wholesale fresh food market Mercabarna and the UPC are creating a university chair to study how to prevent and reduce food waste in the stages of production and wholesale and retail distribution of the food chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MercabarnaUPC-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7532\" width=\"477\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MercabarnaUPC-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MercabarnaUPC-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MercabarnaUPC-1-219x146.jpg 219w, https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MercabarnaUPC-1-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MercabarnaUPC-1-112x75.jpg 112w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width:767px) 477px, 477px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the&nbsp;Barcelona School of Biosystems and Agri-Food Engineering (EEABB), the&nbsp;<strong>Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya \u00b7 BarcelonaTech (UPC)&nbsp;<\/strong>will be responsible for carrying out the project with Mercabarna that the university won in a call for public Catalan universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chair, called the&nbsp;<strong>UPC-Mercabarna chair to fight against food waste<\/strong>, will have an annual budget of 30,000 euros and a length of 3 years that can be extended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Innovative research to boost food use&nbsp;<br><\/strong>The objectives of the chair are focused on five strategic areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Diagnosis and study&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Indicators will be identified and established that can be used to quantify food loss and waste in stages of the food chain from production to the consumer, from field to table. In addition, research will be carried out to find technological and innovative solutions that will improve food use.<\/li><li><strong>Good practices&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 A ten-point list of good practices will be created to prevent and reduce loss and waste in stages of the food chain.<\/li><li><strong>Meeting point&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Synergies, partnerships and meeting points can be created with key stakeholders in sectors involved in the fight against food waste and loss.<\/li><li><strong>Training and transfer&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 knowledge and training will be transferred to obtain the maximum possible food use.<\/li><li><strong>Communication and awareness raising&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Studies that are undertaken will be disseminated through the media and spaces specialized in the subject area. Awareness-raising strategies must be defined and developed among the population in relation to the problem of food waste and its social and environmental effects.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The chair\u2019s team\u00a0<br><\/strong>At the UPC, the chair will be organised by teaching staff from the\u00a0Barcelona School of Biosystems and Agri-Food Engineering (EEABB), with which Mercabarna has been working for years in various areas of research and training. The chair will be managed by professor\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/directori.upc.edu\/directori\/dadesPersona.jsp?id=1003964\" target=\"_blank\">Josep Maria Gil<\/a>, who teaches Agricultural Economics at the UPC and is director of the\u00a0Centre for Agrifood Economics and Development (CREDA)\u00a0of the UPC and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\">IRTA<\/a>, where he is responsible for the research area. The deputy manager for training will be\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/directori.upc.edu\/directori\/dadesPersona.jsp?id=1045594\" target=\"_blank\">Anna Gras<\/a>, a PhD holder in agricultural engineering and director of the EEABB.
