{"id":9878,"date":"2019-10-10T16:15:22","date_gmt":"2019-10-10T16:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/piceo_earto\/"},"modified":"2021-01-11T16:36:16","modified_gmt":"2021-01-11T16:36:16","slug":"piceo_earto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/en\/piceo_earto\/","title":{"rendered":"The PICEO project, second place in the EARTO Innovation Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\">10\/10\/2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PICEO project, developed by the Centre for Sensors, Instruments and Systems Development (CD6 UPC), has won second place in the \u2018Impact Expected\u2019 category of the <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.earto.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/Innovation-Awards-2019-Brochure.pdf\">Innovation Awards 2019<\/a> that are organised annually by EARTO in Brussels. The competition entry was submitted by the CIT UPC through the Spanish Federation of Technology Centres (Fedit), of which it is a contributing member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The award-winning project consists of the development of a new technology for manufacturing photonic integrated circuits for a wide range of applications (including led lights and sensors) that can reduce costs and energy consumption by up to 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/EARTO-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9869\" width=\"469\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/EARTO-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/EARTO-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/EARTO-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/EARTO-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/EARTO-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/EARTO-195x146.jpg 195w, https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/EARTO-50x38.jpg 50w, https:\/\/cit.upc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/EARTO-100x75.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width:767px) 469px, 469px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the prize-giving, held at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, finalists and winners had the opportunity to present their projects to the attendees. The technology centres Fraunhofer (Germany) and CEA (France) won first prizes in the \u2018Impact Delivered\u2019 and \u2018Impact Expected\u2019 categories respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fraunhofer received an award in the Impact category for the development of a software tool called Multi-Criteria Optimization (MCO) to provide support in radiotherapy treatment for cancer. The tool will contribute to increasing long-term survival rates, with less side effects and better quality of life for patients. CEA received a prize in the Impact category for the development of the Smart Energy Hub, a hybrid energy storage and cogeneration system that enables buildings to use their own supply of clean energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Created in 2009, the EARTO Innovation Awards highlight the areas of activities of Technology Centres and illustrate specific contributions to innovation that have a high social impact in two categories: Impact Delivered and Impact Expected, depending on the proximity of the technology to the market. An independent jury gives the awards to the best innovations every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the day of the prize-giving, EARTO published the 2019 Edition of the catalogue <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.earto.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/Innovation-Awards-2019-Brochure.pdf\">Innovation Awards<\/a>, a collection of 25 innovations by members of EARTO, which shows the capacity of technology centres to support innovation in Europe, their focus on resolving current challenges and their impact.
