Su estructura es altamente porosa y confiere a los aerogeles de unas caracter\u00edsticas \u00fanicas, como por ejemplo tener una baja densidad, una gran superficie espec\u00edfica o una baja conductividad t\u00e9rmica, lo que los hace especialmente adecuados para distintas aplicaciones, como la absorci\u00f3n de contaminantes, la liberaci\u00f3n controlada de f\u00e1rmacos, andamios (scaffolds) para aplicaciones biom\u00e9dicas, aislamiento t\u00e9rmico y supercondensadores.\r<br>En este contexto, el grupo de investigaci\u00f3n e-PLASCOM trabaja en el desarrollo de aerogeles multifuncionales formados con pol\u00edmeros naturales o biodegradables, con el objetivo de que estos sean alternativas ecol\u00f3gicas que puedan llegar a sustituir, al menos parcialmente, los materiales de origen no renovable utilizados hasta el momento.\r<br>La obtenci\u00f3n de aerogeles multifuncionales de origen natural puede ser una v\u00eda para crear estructuras espumadas sostenibles con elevadas prestaciones mec\u00e1nicas, una baja conductividad t\u00e9rmica y una alta resistencia t\u00e9rmica.
