The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC), through the UPC Technology Center (CIT UPC), has participated in the 2023 edition of Equiplast, the International Plastics and Rubber Event. The event has taken place from 30 May to 2 June at the Gran Via venue of the Fira de Barcelona. The UPC has been on the stand of the Advanced Materials Cluster of Catalonia (MAV).
In addition, CIT UPC has been again a collaborating entity for EXPOQUIMIA, the International Chemistry Event, that has taken place on the same dates and has been held at the same time as Eurosurfas, the International Meeting Point for the Surface Treatment Industry, as well as the 15th Mediterranean Congress in Chemical Engineering (MECCE 2023).

This year, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC), through the UPC Technology Center (CIT UPC), has been at Equiplast, the International Plastics and Rubber Event, from 30 May to 2 June at the Gran Via venue of the Fira de Barcelona. The UPC has been on the Advanced Materials Cluster of Catalonia (MAV Cluster) stand, along with the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), ALBA Synchrotron, Oimo and Menzolit.
On the stand, CIT UPC has demonstrated the UPC technological capabilities available for innovation in companies and some of its most innovative projects:
- WAVE Project: Industrial polymers of high added value from recycling devulcanized elastomers, in which the Polymer Materials and Textile Chemistry (POLQUITEX) research group of the UPC participates.
- RevalPET'UP Project: New high-value materials based on recycled PET. With the participation of the Eco-friendly Plastics and Composites (e-PLASCOM) group of the UPC.
- Project: New materials based on recycled rubber for domestic, industrial and transport applications. With the participation of the Eco-friendly Plastics and Composites (e-PLASCOM) group of the UPC.
- AERoGELS Project: Biodegradable multifunctional aerogels as an alternative to plastic, in which the Eco-friendly Plastics and Composites (e-PLASCOM) of the UPC participates.
- Solution of multifunctional nanocomposite hydrogels for advanced skincare, in which the Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology Group (GBMI) of the UPC participates.
- POLYSENSE Project: A new generation of smart surgical meshes to cure abdominal and inguinal hernias. With the participation of the Innovation in Materials and Molecular Engineering Group (IMEM) of the UPC.
- Project: A catalyst that can transform CO2 into ethanol, in which the IMEM group of the UPC and the company B Braun participate.
Equiplast brings together at one fair all of the leading plastic and rubber sectors to exhibit innovative, sustainable solutions to tackle global challenges relating to the environmental impact of these materials. Over four days, it will become a meeting point to promote the latest solutions in circular economy and innovation, with the aim of accelerating the transformation to a more sustainable future. The trade fair has been centred on three strategic areas to respond to the challenges in the sector: the circular economy, digitalization and technology transfer.
Location of the MAV Cluster's and CIT UPC's stand:
Fira Barcelona (Gran Via), Pavilion 3, Level 0, Street G, Booth 75.

- The digitalisation of human senses has advanced significantly in areas such as vision, hearing and touch. However, smell and taste continue to present a technological challenge, as their analysis relies on the identification of volatile or dissolved chemical compounds. While there are various sensors on the market capable of detecting specific gases and substances, they often lack the versatility required for comprehensive recognition of complex odours, showing limitations in adapting to different combinations of compounds.
