- The Resource Recovery and Environmental Management (R2EM) of the Center for Research in Multiscale Science and Engineering (CCEM) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) is leading the HARMONIZE project, which focuses on the recovery and valorisation of ammonia from urban and industrial waste streams. The project is part of a larger initiative, MemTecWare, coordinated by the UCM.
- The Tecnologia Orientada a la Comunitat (TOC) research group at UPC, in collaboration with the Centre d'Estudis Porcins de Catalunya, leads the AEROFER project, which aims to demonstrate the viability of liquid fertilisers derived from pig manure in aeroponic cultivation, with the intention of later extrapolating it to conventional crops, thereby closing the loop from waste to resource, with a positive environmental impact on the region.
- The Agricultural Mechanization Unit (UMA) coordinates RENOVATE, a European project aimed at fostering the exchange of practical knowledge among farmers to optimize sustainable crop management through innovation.
- The project, led by the Paper Engineering Research Group (CELBIOTECH) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), aims to obtain different subproducts from the waste generated during industrial hemp cultivation, also known as hemp fibre. The proposed processes are technologies already used in biorefineries and the paper industry but with different raw materials.
- Microalgae-based wastewater treatment systems have demonstrated the ability to recover nutrients from wastewater and produce valuable biomass for agricultural applications while also recovering energy through the anaerobic digestion of residual biomass. In the Cyan2Bio project, in which the Group of Environmental Engineering and Microbiology (GEMMA) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) is participating, an additional step will be taken in the valorisation of microalgae biomass to obtain biopolymers suitable for transformation into bioplastics alongside pigments, thereby replacing fossil-based materials.
- The energy transition is reshaping the foundations of the power grid, driven by the massive deployment of renewable generation based on power electronics and the gradual disconnection of conventional fossil-based generation. In this context, grid operators will require support systems to provide flexibility, as renewable generation is highly variable.
- Since the early 21st century, the agricultural sector has faced significant challenges, such as the increasing demand for quality products and a lack of generational replacement. In this context, the agri-food sector is compelled to follow the example of other industries and prioritise digitalisation and automation to ensure sustainability and competitiveness.
- The project, led by the Centre for Advanced Technologies in Mechanics (CATMech) research group at UPC, aims to minimise the by-product waste in hemp cultivation through the development of a competitive industrial plant, reduce energy consumption, and increase comfort in buildings through research into innovative insulation panels in bioconstruction.
- RootBot aims to develop and demonstrate an autonomous robotic electromagnetic detection system equipped with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and advanced navigation technologies to map the root systems of fruit trees and soil moisture. This project seeks to optimize agricultural resource management, particularly water, and contribute to more sustainable farming through the use of innovative technological tools.
- A team of researchers from the materials and structures area of CATMech at UPC is participating in a circular economy project to study the feasibility of using canemuixa, a by-product of hemp, in five applications in the building sector.
- The Agricultural Machinery Unit (UMA) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) participated in the CULTISENSOR project to design, manufacture and validate a sensing subsoiler prototype for soil decompaction. This instrument allows mapping and interpretation of the physical conditions of soil when fieldwork activities are being carried out.
- Researchers at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), in collaboration with the MINOS group of the URV, are participating in a project on the reliable, high-performance and low-cost production of ammonia sensors for livestock farming.
- A team of researchers from the Department of Agri-Food Engineering and Biotechnology of the Barcelona School of Agri-Food and Biosystems Engineering (EEABB), associated with the Specific Research Centre for Agri-Food Technology (Agrotech UPC), and the Design and Assessment group of Broadband Networks and Services (BAMPLA) at the Castelldefels School of Telecommunications and Aerospace Engineering (EETAC), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), are participating in the development of a monitoring and decision support system for weed management in crops.
- A team of UPC researchers is working to develop a solution to standardise and improve quality control in fermentation processes in the Agrotech area.
- The microÚs project, in which the Agricultural Machinery Unit (UMA) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) participates, is designed to demonstrate the use of a certain formulation of copper-based microcapsules to increase the retention of this metal in leaves in intensive production of horticultural crops such as onion, lettuce and tomato. This enables a reduction in the use of the product and an improvement in the sustainability of the process.
- Currently, concerns about sustainability are increasing in the construction sector, due to its contribution to climate change. Approximately a third of carbon dioxide emissions are produced by this sector in the construction phase and in the functioning of buildings.
