The Centre for Advanced Technologies in Mechanics (CATMech) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC) is involved in a project to explore additive manufacturing technology with concrete to provide innovative solutions to the construction market. The project, called ADRIANO, aims to develop a real-time control system for the concrete manufacturing process, to estimate the expected outcome and anticipate decision-making on its various stages.

To achieve this, the pumping phase is monitored with the pumping system. The output is sensed at the time of printing. The evolution of the mixture once it has been placed in the final product and the output phase of the material that has already been mixed are also monitored. The sensors measure aspects such as moisture, temperature, flow rate and pressure. They collect a set of data that is compared with other standard tests, which allows the definition of properties of the mixture: workability, pumping capacity, construction ability and estimation of opening time, among others.
The CATMech group is in charge of the operation of the printing machine, the sensors, the contrast tests and the data analysis. The tests are carried out at the FactoryLab facilities of the School of Industrial, Aerospace and Audiovisual Engineering of Terrassa (ESEIAAT).
As a result, this monitoring will optimise the manufacturing process and control production to obtain higher quality parts and reduce time and material losses.
Budget and financing
In addition to CATMech of the UPC, the project, which has a budget of 73,927.05 euros, involves VIAS and Construcciones. ADRIAN started in July 2021 and will end in July 2024. It has received funding from ACCIÓ, the Agency for Business Competitiveness.

The project, called ADRIANO, aims to develop a real-time control system for the concrete manufacturing process, to estimate the expected outcome and anticipate decision-making on its various stages.
- A team of researchers from the Manufacturing Technologies Research Group (TECNOFAB) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) has participated in BRUVIT. The aim of this project is to develop and validate the ball burnishing process assisted by ultrasonic vibration to improve the hardness and surface integrity of parts on a parallel lathe.
- An international consortium of universities, hospitals and companies, led by the Centre for Sensors, Instruments and Systems Development (CD6) at the UPC, is developing new technologies based on light and artificial intelligence to improve the diagnosis of various diseases.
- The protection of infrastructures is a commercial and environmental challenge as it enables the useful life of these elements to be lengthened and avoids the early generation of residues.
- The Technological Development Centre for Remote Acquisition and Data Processing Systems (SARTI) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) participates in the SEASLAG project, which contributes to measurement and test systems to assess the characteristics of the biomaterials developed in the project, to regenerate marine ecosystems. This material incorporates byproducts from the metal and agrifood industries.
- The research group Barcelona Innovative Transportation (BIT) and the innovation and research laboratory of Barcelona School of Informatics (inLab FIB) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) is taking part in the project eBRT2030 (European Bus Rapid Transit of 2030: electrified, automated, connected).
- Participants in the HybridNeuro project include researchers from the group BIOART, which is part of the CREB of the UPC. The project is designed to establish a new way of analysing the motor system and human musculoskeletal movements, and the transfer of academic research to clinical practice and industry.
- The research group Plastics and Ecological Composites (e-PLASCOM) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), and the Catalan Plastics Center (CCP), work in a project that aims to design ad hoc natural rubber-based composites, with specific compositions and geometries, to be optimally integrated into both EC and BC technologies at prototype level.
- The Centre for Sensors, Instruments and Systems Development (CD6) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) is taking part in PhotonHub Europe. This is a European project to establish a single pan-European hub for innovation in photonics as a one-stop shop solution that brings together the pioneering photonics solutions, facilities, knowledge and experience of 53 European partners.
- Currently, concerns about sustainability are increasing in the construction sector, due to its contribution to climate change. Approximately a third of carbon dioxide emissions are produced by this sector in the construction phase and in the functioning of buildings.
- Researchers from the Plasmas for BioMedical Applications Laboratory (PlasmaMED Lab) of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), are working to develop a new treatment for bone cancer, which avoids the secondary effects of conventional treatments – such as chemotherapy – and enables bone regeneration when the tumour has been surgically resected.
- The SCAPE project has been developed with the participation of the Power Electronics Research Group (GREP) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC). The aim is to advance towards design standardisation, cost reduction and an improvement in the features of electronic power conversion systems for the future generation of electric vehicles.
- The flexibility of electrical systems is fundamental in the process of energy transition towards more sustainable energy generation models. The European Commission promotes the development of solutions that respond to the challenges of managing electricity distribution networks in the future energy system based on renewable sources. An increasingly large proportion of fluctuating electricity generators, such as wind and solar systems, makes it difficult to calculate the loads that are being supplied.
- The Motion Control and Industrial Applications (MCIA) centre, the Terrassa Industrial Electronics Group (TIEG) and the Environmental Engineering (ENMA) group of the UPC participate in RHODaS, a project to improve integrated motor propulsion systems for multiple drive architectures with more efficient materials, new semiconductors, better heat management and standardisation of manufacture of power convertors.
- The AI4WATER project proposes optimizing the use of available water resources, to mitigate the effects of increasing water scarcity in agriculture and to improve food safety through the creation of a digital twin (DT) in an irrigation sector of the Segarra-Garrigues region (Lleida). Participants in the project are the Specific Research Centre in Communication and Detection of the UPC (CommSensLab-UPC), the Center for Industrial Equipment Design (CDEI) and the Geophysics and Earthquake Engineering (GiES) group of the UPC.
- The Centre of Applied Research in Hydrometeorology (CRAHI) of the UPC participates in the European project RESIST. The aim of this project is to study the use of tools to improve preparation for weather emergencies and thus to increase resilience in the face of climate change.
